Weekend Meet Recap
With the dual meet against North Creek on Saturday and the Relay Carnival on Sunday, it was a busy weekend of swimming. Despite the heat and intense competition, the Tigers won the dual meet on Saturday and grabbed the top spot at Relay Carnival on Sunday.
Dual Meet vs North Creek
The A meet against North Creek promised to be a close meet based on the projected scoring based on the results from the season so far. Match-ups would be key in certain age groups, and it would take a team effort to swim to victory. As the meet progressed, it was clear that our team effort was driving us forward despite some of the star power for North Creek.
Bruce Barboza opened up the meet with a victory in the 12 & Under Boys 100 IM. Bruce posted all best times in the meet on his way to a second straight week as a "clean sweeper". The 2-3-5 finish in 12 & Under Girls 100 IM for Lena Bossler, Chrissy Wasel, and Mary Kate Wasel was a hint of how the day would go, as our depth was on display throughout the meet.
Our Open Medley relays kept their winning streaks alive to open up a lead over North Creek that we would never relinquish. The Boys relay posted a season-best time, and the Girls swam to a 1-2 finish. Each of the winning relays posted faster times by about four seconds from the first dual meet.
The Freestyle events progressed nicely. While we won only the 11-12 Boys 50 Free and the 13-14 Boys 50 Free, we scored consistently through the events, offsetting some of their victories with a 2-3-4 finish in 8 & Under Boys 25 Free by Kevin Ourand, Anthony Hill, and Avery Miller. The 13-14 Boys jumped out to a 1-2 finish, led by Russell Sangster and Bryan Van Gieson. The 13-14 Girls chipped in with a 2-3 finish by Tricia Rowedder and Katie English, and the 11-12 Boys followed that effort with a 1-2 finish by Bruce Barboza and Mickey Van Gieson. Lena Bossler posted a second place finish for the 11-12 Girls, and then the 15-18 swimmers took their opportunity to shine. The 15-18 Boys went 2-3-5 from swims by Antonio Deshields, Paul Rowedder, and Oliver Sangster. The 15-18 Girls upped the ante, posting a 2-3-4-5-6-7 finish by Taylor Swift, Monica Claro, Caroline Argyros, Anna Barboza, Lauren Malusky, and Annie Warner.
Moving on to the 13-14 100 IM, Russell Sangster and Bryan Van Gieson continued their strong showing with a 1-2 finish, while Tricia Rowedder and Katie English each posted season best times on the way to a 2-4 finish for the 13-14 girls. After the IM events, we moved into Backstroke. After holding even during the 8 & Under and 9-10 25 Back, the 15-18 Boys and Girls extended our lead with 2-3-4 finishes in their respective events. Not to be outdone, the next 3 events featured outstanding finishes in the 11-12 Boys 50 Back by Johnny English and Mickey Van Gieson, a 1-2-3 finish in the 11-12 Girls 50 Back by Chrissy Wasel, Mary Kate Wasel, and Gianna D'Avella, and capped by a 1-2 finish in the 13-14 Boys 50 Back by Bryan Van Gieson and Francis Rowedder. This pushed our lead out to 222-190 at halftime.
After the break, the 15-18s started up with the 100 IM. Paul Trigonoplos, Antonio Deshields, and Paul Rowedder raced to a 1-3-4 finish, while Taylor Swift, Monica Claro, and Anna Barboza finished 2-3-4. This was the third event for the 15-18 Girls where they finished 2-3-4, and for the meet they outscored North Creek in every stroke despite only winning an individual event only once.
The Breaststroke events were where we started to pull away. The 8 & Under Boys got things rolling with a 1-3 finish in 25 Breast by Kevin Ourand and Tom Kilmer. The 8 & Under Girls raced well against strong competition, as did the 9-10 boys. The 9-10 Girls, facing a tough lineup, split the 25 Breast event with a 2-3-5 finish by Annie Marcolin, Sophia Radich, and Keely Mashburn. Bruce Barboza and Johnny English raced to a 1-2 finish in the 11-12 Boys 50 Breast, and Lena Bossler captured first place in the Girls 11-12 50 Breast. Russell Sangster led the way to a 1-3-4 finish in the 13-14 Boys 50 Breast along with Cristian Beatley and Matthew Hill. The 13-14 Girls, seeded behind the North Creek girls all day, kept up the pressure with a 2-3-5 finish by Tricia Rowedder, Katie English, and Deena Mayer-Whittington. The 15-18s closed out Breaststroke with a 1-3-4 finish by the boys and a 1-2-4 finish by the girls, highlighted by Taylor Swift and Monica Claro swimming season best times. These swims extended the lead and put us in great shape to secure victory.
Anthony Hill opened up the Fly events by headlining a 1-2-3 finish by Wheaton Woods along with Kevin Ourand and Avery Miller. Julie Kilmer swam to a strong second place finish for the girls, and Marcello Beatley powered to first place for the 9-10 boys. The 9-10 girls closed out their individual efforts with a 3-4-5 finish by Brigid English, Theresa Moynihan, and Keely Mashburn. Bruce Barboza paced the 11-12 boys with his fourth individual first place finish, dropping over four seconds with the effort. Benedict Radich also posted a nice time drop of two seconds while chipping in points with his finish. Chrissy Wasel made her case for the swim of the meet with a strong second place finish as she dropped over six seconds in the 11-12 Girls 50 Fly, and was joined by Lena Bossler and Gianna D'Avella in posting a season best time. Bryan Van Gieson followed suit with a three second drop on the way to a first place finish in the 13-14 Boys 50 Fly, and the 13-14 Girls all posted best times with the 2-3-5 finish by Haley O'Brien, Katie English, and Alex Wasel. The 15-18s closed out the individual events with 1-2-3 and 2-3-4 finishes in 50 Fly, with the boys led by Antonio Deshields, Paul Rowedder, and Paul Trigonoplos, while the girls featured Taylor Swift, Caroline Argyros, and Monica Claro.
The victory in the Graduated Free Relay by the boys was icing on the cake, and the girls posted their best time of the season to conclude the meet.
As this meet demonstrated over and over, while getting first place is important, winning a meet takes a lot more than just getting a first place finish. The strength of our team is our depth, and we kept scoring more points in each event despite having fewer first-place finishes than North Creek. It was a true team effort for victory.

Lineup for dual meet vs North Creek 6/26
Updated Friday morning
There are a few changes this morning due to some confusion on my part about swimmer availability. The revised entry is posted below. If you were swimming in the meet in the original posted lineup, you are still swimming. The changes did not take people out of the meet, but did change a few events for a single age group.
The lineup for the A meet on Saturday June 26 is complete.

Document links updated
I updated the links to the meet results, entries, and other documents that have been posted. The documents are now hosted properly and will not prompt you for passwords, account registrations, or cover the page with ads.
Links to documents
I have gotten some emails indicating that some of you are having problems accessing the documents I have been posting for meet entries. I also noticed that the Google Docs rendering of the PDF files is clipping off some information that is visible when you actually download the document. I am looking at some other options for posting documents other than Google Docs, so you may see some changes on that front in the very near future.

Parent Volunteers this weekend for the 'A' Meet and the 'A' Relay Carnival
This is a busy weekend with the 'A' Meet at North Creek on Saturday morning and the 'A' Relay Carnival, again at North Creek, on Sunday morning. Please watch this space in the next day for further information regarding caravans and driving directions to North Creek.
'A' Meet on Saturday June 26th at North Creek
A sign-up sheet has been posted on the swim team bulletin board for parent volunteers for the meet on Saturday.
We need our usual complement of timers, one or two parents at the awards/ribbons table, and two parents at the automation table. The more parents we have, we might be able to alternate so that each parent can work one half each. I would also like one additional parent at the Clerk of Course area. Please stop by and sign up to help out.
'A' Relay Carnival on Sunday June 27th at North Creek
A sign-up sheet has been posted on the swim team bulletin board for parent volunteers for the 'A' Relay Carnival on Sunday.
We need three (3) timers, one (1) more take-off judge, and one or two parents to help out at automation. The more parent volunteers we get, the greater chance there is that parents can work one half each. For automation, parents will not work more than one half and there is a chance that it will be less because each team is providing assistance.
I have to submit the names of our parent volunteers by Friday night, so please sign up to volunteer. If you cannot make it to the pool, please email me and let me know which position you would like to help out with.
Thanks in advance, and please stop by and sign up to help at both of these meets!

Lineups for Saturday and Sunday
The lineup for the A meet on Saturday 6/26 at North Creek will be posted this afternoon, and the draft lineup for Relay Carnival will be published at that time as well.
The lineup for Relay Carnival may still based on results from the Saturday meet, so any posting will be tentative until after the meet on Saturday.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you are listed in either lineup and are unable to swim on Saturday or Sunday. We have done very well so far with our lineup, and I'd like to keep the meet attendance on track and the lanes full.

Meet vs Twinbrook Wednesday 6/23
There were many excellent swims last night, including more than a few people who earned spots in the A meet on Saturday. We have had great effort in practice, and it is showing up in the meet results. Great job everyone.
As always, many thanks to all of the parent volunteers who help make the first home B meet a success. We can't run the meets without your help, so your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Entries guidelines for Wednesday night meets
Our first home meet of the year is a B meet against Twinbrook this Wednesday. We swim with a different group of teams for our Wednesday night B meets, and we have a different set of rules for meet eligibility. The rules are intended to make the meet environment provide appropriate competition. Here are the rules that we use when making entries for the Wednesday meets:

Reminder on meet availability
Thanks to all of those who have been diligent in letting me know about your availability for meets. We had perfect attendance for Saturday's meet. As we get into a very busy second week of meets, with meets on Wednesday and Saturday, plus Relay Carnival on Sunday, please make sure that you let me know if you will not be available for any of those activities.
As you have may have noticed, we don't make a distinction between an 'A' team and a 'B' team. We are a single team, and everyone will have same opportunity to earn the chance to swim on Saturdays or in special events like the Relay Carnival. Since we are a relatively small team, we may need everyone in some age groups to participate.

A meet recap - WW vs. Twin Farms
Our first dual meet of the season was an away meet at Twin Farms. The meet got off to a great start with Bruce Barboza taking 1st place in the 100 12 & under IM. This would be a recurring theme for Bruce, as he turned in many outstanding performances en route to winning all of his individual and relay events. The 12 & under girls 100 IM saw strong swims from Lena Bossler, Chrissy Wasel, and Mary Kate Wasel as they faced strong competition from the 11-12 girls from Twin Farms.
Things really got rolling with the open medley relays. Both the boys and the girls took first in their respective relays. The girls’ medley was highlighted by a great anchor swim by Annie Warner to secure the victory. As we started the freestyle events, the 8 & unders kept the momentum going, with Anthony Hill and Sarah Marcolin each taking first place in 25 free, and both of them posting times close to the All-Star times. A few other swims stood out due to the tremendous improvement shown since Time Trials: Matthias Barish, Justin Davis, and Christine Welton all had improvements of over 6 seconds, and Avery Miller, Joseph Moynihan, Rebecca Whelton, Therese McGovern, and Tali Zambrano all posted improvements of over 3 seconds. Our 8 & unders were outstanding all morning at the meet, and their hard work in practice is showing up in our meet performance.
In 9-10 freestyle, Matthew Ourand and Annie Marcolin posted impressive drops in time. Our 9-10 boys turned in a 2-3-4-5 finish, and also featured big time drops for Marcello Beatley and Gabriel Morales. Our 13-14 boys followed that with an incredible showing, taking 6 of the top 7 spots in their event. Gabriel Wilson and Francis Rowedder posted big time improvements, and Russell Sangster won the first of the 3 events that would he would capture during the meet. Katie English, Haley O’Brien, and Alex Wasel paced the 13-14 girls with 1-3-4 finish, again showing big improvements from their times at Time Trials.
The 11-12 boys showed their depth in posting a 1-2-3-5-6 finish. Mickey Van Gieson dropped over 5 seconds on the way to his second place finish, and James Hill finished strong to grab fifth place and post a nearly 2 second drop in time. Lena Bossler raced to a third-place finish against strong competition for the 11-12 girls, while Gianna D’Avella and Ashley Jeffers had strong showings with time improvements of nearly 6 and 4 seconds respectively. The 15-18 boys were paced by the 1-2 finish of Antonio Deshields and Paul Rowedder, and the 15-18 girls ran a clean sweep with a 1-2-3-4 finish for Taylor Swift, Monica Claro, Caroline Argyros, and Annie Warner. Joseph Malusky showed his progression with a drop of over 6 seconds, featuring an outstanding last 25 to touch out the swimmer next to him, and David Malusky and Paul Wasel each posted improvements of about five seconds in their swims.
Our showing in the freestyle events was outstanding and really set the tone for the rest of the meet. We jumped out to a 228 – 181 lead at halftime, and extended our lead in the second half to score a victory. While I would love to recap every event, this post is already running very long, so I will wrap it up with a few additional recognitions.

Meet lineup for Saturday June 19
The lineup for Saturday's meet at Twin Farms is complete. Please review the entry to see what events you are swimming at the meet. Just about everyone outside of our youngest swimmers is swimming in the meet. If you are entered in the meet and will not be able to swim, please let me know as soon as possible. Many thanks to all of those who have been keeping me posted as to their availability for future meets.
A copy of the entry can be found here. A copy will also be posted at the pool at practice tomorrow morning.

Clarification on suits
If you don't have a team suit, then a solid color suit, preferably black, is a good alternative.
We do want to see suits appropriate for racing and not suits that are large or overly baggy.

Morning practices have begun
This morning was our first morning practice, and it went very well. Attendance was good, and we were able to get times for most everyone who missed Time Trials on Saturday. We have the entire pool available to us for morning practice, so I strongly encourage everyone to make mornings if possible. Afternoons will continue on the same schedule, but there will not be afternoon practices on Wednesdays and Fridays due to B meets and pep rallies.

Note on Time Trials makeup
As previously announced, the plan is to run the makeup for Time Trials during practice this evening. However, it does appear that weather may be an issue this afternoon, with the forecast showing thunderstorms to be likely during our normal practice time.
If we are unable to conduct practice this evening due to the weather, then Thursday morning practice will be used for the makeup.

Saturday Meet Theme - Cops & Robbers
For our first meet of the season, the theme will be cops and robbers. Have fun putting together a costume and showing your team spirit.
Registration reminder
Anyone who has not yet turned in their registration forms needs to do so as soon as possible. As I was working on the entry for Saturday, I noticed that there are people who should be entered in the meet who are not yet registered. Please complete and return your forms to Mike Trigonoplos some time this week.
Apparel reminder
Team caps will be available from the coaches sometime on Thursday. The caps design is the same as last year - an orange cap with a black tiger paw on one side, and WW on the other side. Swimmers with long hair are expected to wear caps at meets. Team suits are also expected to be worn at meets.
A rule change regarding suits was made by USA Swimming in October 2009, and these rules apply to MCSL as well. Any of the specialized full body or full leg suits are no longer permitted to be used in competition. Additionally, any suit with a zipper is no longer permitted as well. I know a few of you have suits of this type that were worn last season, so please make sure that you have a suitable and legal replacement for these now-banned technical swimsuits.

Regarding the lineup for Saturday's meet - June 19
I have started work on the meet entry, but it will not be able to be completed until we get times for those who missed time trials. I do expect the meet roster to be completed and posted on Thursday night. Please check the roster carefully, as some swimmers who have not previously swum in the Saturday meets may have made the lineup.
I'd also like to remind you to please let me know of any meets that you will miss so that I can make sure we have someone ready to fill those spots. This applies for both Saturday morning and Wednesday night meets.

Please plan on being there if you missed Time Trials, as we need to work on the lineup for the first meet on Saturday. If you are not able to make the Wednesday afternoon session, please send me a note.
