Weekend Meet Recap

With the dual meet against North Creek on Saturday and the Relay Carnival on Sunday, it was a busy weekend of swimming. Despite the heat and intense competition, the Tigers won the dual meet on Saturday and grabbed the top spot at Relay Carnival on Sunday.

Dual Meet vs North Creek
The A meet against North Creek promised to be a close meet based on the projected scoring based on the results from the season so far. Match-ups would be key in certain age groups, and it would take a team effort to swim to victory. As the meet progressed, it was clear that our team effort was driving us forward despite some of the star power for North Creek.

Bruce Barboza opened up the meet with a victory in the 12 & Under Boys 100 IM. Bruce posted all best times in the meet on his way to a second straight week as a "clean sweeper". The 2-3-5 finish in 12 & Under Girls 100 IM for Lena Bossler, Chrissy Wasel, and Mary Kate Wasel was a hint of how the day would go, as our depth was on display throughout the meet.

Our Open Medley relays kept their winning streaks alive to open up a lead over North Creek that we would never relinquish. The Boys relay posted a season-best time, and the Girls swam to a 1-2 finish. Each of the winning relays posted faster times by about four seconds from the first dual meet.

The Freestyle events progressed nicely. While we won only the 11-12 Boys 50 Free and the 13-14 Boys 50 Free, we scored consistently through the events, offsetting some of their victories with a 2-3-4 finish in 8 & Under Boys 25 Free by Kevin Ourand, Anthony Hill, and Avery Miller. The 13-14 Boys jumped out to a 1-2 finish, led by Russell Sangster and Bryan Van Gieson. The 13-14 Girls chipped in with a 2-3 finish by Tricia Rowedder and Katie English, and the 11-12 Boys followed that effort with a 1-2 finish by Bruce Barboza and Mickey Van Gieson. Lena Bossler posted a second place finish for the 11-12 Girls, and then the 15-18 swimmers took their opportunity to shine. The 15-18 Boys went 2-3-5 from swims by Antonio Deshields, Paul Rowedder, and Oliver Sangster. The 15-18 Girls upped the ante, posting a 2-3-4-5-6-7 finish by Taylor Swift, Monica Claro, Caroline Argyros, Anna Barboza, Lauren Malusky, and Annie Warner.

Moving on to the 13-14 100 IM, Russell Sangster and Bryan Van Gieson continued their strong showing with a 1-2 finish, while Tricia Rowedder and Katie English each posted season best times on the way to a 2-4 finish for the 13-14 girls. After the IM events, we moved into Backstroke. After holding even during the 8 & Under and 9-10 25 Back, the 15-18 Boys and Girls extended our lead with 2-3-4 finishes in their respective events. Not to be outdone, the next 3 events featured outstanding finishes in the 11-12 Boys 50 Back by Johnny English and Mickey Van Gieson, a 1-2-3 finish in the 11-12 Girls 50 Back by Chrissy Wasel, Mary Kate Wasel, and Gianna D'Avella, and capped by a 1-2 finish in the 13-14 Boys 50 Back by Bryan Van Gieson and Francis Rowedder. This pushed our lead out to 222-190 at halftime.

After the break, the 15-18s started up with the 100 IM. Paul Trigonoplos, Antonio Deshields, and Paul Rowedder raced to a 1-3-4 finish, while Taylor Swift, Monica Claro, and Anna Barboza finished 2-3-4. This was the third event for the 15-18 Girls where they finished 2-3-4, and for the meet they outscored North Creek in every stroke despite only winning an individual event only once.

The Breaststroke events were where we started to pull away. The 8 & Under Boys got things rolling with a 1-3 finish in 25 Breast by Kevin Ourand and Tom Kilmer. The 8 & Under Girls raced well against strong competition, as did the 9-10 boys. The 9-10 Girls, facing a tough lineup, split the 25 Breast event with a 2-3-5 finish by Annie Marcolin, Sophia Radich, and Keely Mashburn. Bruce Barboza and Johnny English raced to a 1-2 finish in the 11-12 Boys 50 Breast, and Lena Bossler captured first place in the Girls 11-12 50 Breast. Russell Sangster led the way to a 1-3-4 finish in the 13-14 Boys 50 Breast along with Cristian Beatley and Matthew Hill. The 13-14 Girls, seeded behind the North Creek girls all day, kept up the pressure with a 2-3-5 finish by Tricia Rowedder, Katie English, and Deena Mayer-Whittington. The 15-18s closed out Breaststroke with a 1-3-4 finish by the boys and a 1-2-4 finish by the girls, highlighted by Taylor Swift and Monica Claro swimming season best times. These swims extended the lead and put us in great shape to secure victory.

Anthony Hill opened up the Fly events by headlining a 1-2-3 finish by Wheaton Woods along with Kevin Ourand and Avery Miller. Julie Kilmer swam to a strong second place finish for the girls, and Marcello Beatley powered to first place for the 9-10 boys. The 9-10 girls closed out their individual efforts with a 3-4-5 finish by Brigid English, Theresa Moynihan, and Keely Mashburn. Bruce Barboza paced the 11-12 boys with his fourth individual first place finish, dropping over four seconds with the effort. Benedict Radich also posted a nice time drop of two seconds while chipping in points with his finish. Chrissy Wasel made her case for the swim of the meet with a strong second place finish as she dropped over six seconds in the 11-12 Girls 50 Fly, and was joined by Lena Bossler and Gianna D'Avella in posting a season best time. Bryan Van Gieson followed suit with a three second drop on the way to a first place finish in the 13-14 Boys 50 Fly, and the 13-14 Girls all posted best times with the 2-3-5 finish by Haley O'Brien, Katie English, and Alex Wasel. The 15-18s closed out the individual events with 1-2-3 and 2-3-4 finishes in 50 Fly, with the boys led by Antonio Deshields, Paul Rowedder, and Paul Trigonoplos, while the girls featured Taylor Swift, Caroline Argyros, and Monica Claro.

The victory in the Graduated Free Relay by the boys was icing on the cake, and the girls posted their best time of the season to conclude the meet.

As this meet demonstrated over and over, while getting first place is important, winning a meet takes a lot more than just getting a first place finish. The strength of our team is our depth, and we kept scoring more points in each event despite having fewer first-place finishes than North Creek. It was a true team effort for victory.
